Q: How does the Laser work?
A: The Nd: YAG laser produces 1064nm wavelength and while most of your skin is almost completely transparent for this wavelength, the energy is highly absorbed by red blood cells in the vein. Thus, the laser beam passes through the skin and penetrates the targeted vessel. The laser energy heats up and coagulates blood inside the vein. The vessel walls collapse and seal. These vessels are later metabolized by your body.
Q: What can I expect during the treatment?
A: You may experience a stinging, burning sensation during the treatment, which resolves immediately after the treatment is over. Many female patients find the time around their menstruation as particularly sensitive. A non-contact coolant is used to minimize discomfort.
Q: What should I expect after the procedure?
A: The appearance of the treated vessels will dramatically change, turning from blue and purple to light red. Depending on how superficial the area, you may see an immediate removal of the vein. Some of the vessels may bulge, however any inflammation should disappear within a couple of hours. The redness of the treated vessels will gradually disappear as the healing process occurs, which may take anywhere between 2 and 6 weeks depending on the severity of the veins and the patient. The post-operative treatment regimen may include wearing support hose (72 hours for legs), avoiding medication containing aspirin, limited vigorous activity, and wearing sunscreen.
Q: When will I see any changes?
A: Immediately after the treatments the veins will look like a "cat scratch". Some veins may already be gone. Approximately 2-3 weeks after treatment you will begin to see a change in color from deep blue or purple to pink. The pink color will gradually fade until the veins become invisible. The length of time varies greatly between patients.
Q: How many treatments will I need?
A: Depending on the severity of the veins, you may require between one and three treatments. Your first check-up will be six weeks after your initial treatment and again six months later. The treatment is performed on the existing vessels, diminishing or completely eliminating their appearance. The development of new veins cannot be prevented. If your body tends to develop vascular problems you will most likely need to come back for additional treatments.
